Question 1 of 10

Total a column with SUM

Add up six cells with one function instead of five plus signs, and get a total that survives new rows.

=B2+B3+B4+B5+B6+B7 works, and it is the wrong answer. It takes longer to type, it is easy to miss a cell, and it tells you nothing when you read it back.

=SUM(B2:B7) says what it means: total this range. A function is a name, a bracket, and what it should work on.

In B9, use SUM to total the six weekly figures in B2 to B7.

B9
ABCDE
1WeekSales
2Week 11480
3Week 21225
4Week 31610
5Week 4940
6Week 51375
7Week 61180

Click a cell and type. Enter commits, Tab moves right, F2 edits in place, Ctrl+Z undoes. Drag the small square at the corner of a cell to fill. Ctrl+Enter checks your answer.

What this test checks

A practical Excel test asks you to make a sheet work. These questions start with a total and an average, then move to formulas that must survive copying, conditions, matching rows, lookups and cleaning imported text. Each answer is checked against the result and the method. Typing a correct number where a formula belongs does not pass.

References and conditions

Lock a shared rate with dollar signs before filling a formula down. With IF, check the exact boundary: >50 and >=50 give different answers at 50.

Criteria and lookups

COUNTIF counts matching rows; SUMIF totals their values. VLOOKUP needs the lookup key in the first column of its range. INDEX with MATCH can return a value to the left.

Common questions

What does this Excel assessment test cover?

Ten practical questions cover SUM, AVERAGE, absolute references, IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF, VLOOKUP, TRIM, nested IF, and INDEX with MATCH. You work in a spreadsheet grid rather than choose from answers.

Do I need Excel, an account, or a paid plan?

No. All ten questions run on this page in your browser. You can enter formulas and check answers without installing Excel, signing in, or paying.

Is this timed or submitted to an employer?

No. There is no timer and nothing is sent to an employer. If you want to rehearse under pressure, set your own 45-minute timer. Your progress is saved in this browser.
